Nathaniel Clayton, an iron foundry owner in Lincoln and Joseph Shuttleworth, the owner of boat building business joined forces in 1842 and developed the successful engineering firm, Clayton and Shuttleworth.  The company who's works were in Lincoln specialised in building steam engines and agricultural machinery.  They commenced steam roller production around 1900.  While Clayton & Shuttleworth were not one of the major makers of steam rollers, their products were respected for both their quality and reliability.  Despite this, in 1929 they became victims of the depression and were taken over by Marshall’s of Gainsborough. who in their turn collapsed in 1933 to be subsequently taken over by Thos. Ward & Co.
