Aveling & Porter were by far the largest British manufactures of road rollers, some twenty thousand rollers were produced by the firm and it's successors, all bearing the famous emblem of the rampant horse of Kent above the Invicta scroll.

Among the many innovations patented by Thomas Aveling were the hornplates, the extension upwards of the flat sides of the firebox on which could be mounted the bearings for the crankshaft and other drive shafts without putting an unnecessary strain on the boiler.
